Start Date: 8 Feb 2010
End Date: 9 Feb 2010
Date: Monday, 8th February at 6.30pm
Venue: Royal College of Physicians, Kildare Street, Dublin 2.
Dr David. E Fisher (Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Department of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School).
The sun is one of nature’s most attractive symbols of happiness and healthfulness. Yet despite its important roles in sustaining life, certain of its electromagnetic radiation output also poses significant risk to humans. Ultraviolet radiation was required during human evolution for the body’s ability to synthesize vitamin D. However, this radiation carried risk of causing skin cancer—a risk which is absent from use of simple dietary supplements to maintain healthy vitamin D levels. A great deal has been learned about the mechanisms through which UV radiation triggers both desired effects (such as sun-tanning or “good-feelings”) as well as its dangerous consequences (cancer and accelerated aging of the skin). This lecture will review the science as well as the risks of ultraviolet radiation exposure, in relation to sunlight as well as indoor tanning salons. An understanding of these issues may provide opportunities to optimize a healthy lifestyle, and also represents one of the most striking opportunities for cancer prevention in current times.

David E. Fisher is an internationally known researcher, clinician and academic, who is Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Department of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School.Fisher’s research has focused on understanding the molecular and genetic events which underlie formation of melanoma as well as skin pigmentation. As a clinician, he has worked to translate these understandings into advances in diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human diseases related to the skin and associated disorders.
He received his PhD under Nobel Laureate Gunter Blobel at Rockefeller University and his Medical Degree at Cornell University Medical College. Fisher’s specialty training in Medicine, Pediatrics, and Oncology were carried out at Harvard Medical School. He currently is President of the Society for Melanoma Research, the largest international society dedicated to the study of melanoma.
