| IMPORTANT: This course comprises a lecture element (Day 1) and a practical workshop (Day 2). Please note that there is a limited number of places available for the practical workshop. You must first apply online here. If you only wish to attend the lecture element of the course (Day 1), this is all what you need to do at this stage. If you also wish to attend the practical workshop (Day 2), then after applying online, please send an Email to education@MolecularMedicineIreland.ie expressing your interest. Please note that those attending the practical workshop must also attend the lecture element of the course. |

The analysis of genetic determinants in human disease, particularly in multifactorial conditions such as cardiovascular disease, has advanced markedly in recent years due to the availability of high-density maps of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers, new insights into human genome structure from the International HapMap Project and novel analytical methods. This course, running over two days, aims to introduce researchers to key strategic considerations in designing and performing gene-mapping studies using SNP markers. It will also provide ‘hands-on’ experience of data analysis.
Day 1 (10 June) will focus on the nature and dynamics of SNP markers in populations, associations between markers due to the haplotype ‘block’ structure of the human genome and public domain resources for gene-mapping studies. Talks on applying these tools to clinical problems and the evolution of populations includes two Plenary Lectures on Epilepsy genomics (Dr Sanjay Sisodiya, University College London Hospital) and Population genomics of human gene [removed]Dr Emmanouil T. Dermitzakis, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute).
Day 2 (11 June) is designed as a ‘hands-on’ practical workshop that examines resources for selecting SNPs, issues around study design & power and data management, and will give time for some basic analyses of SNP data. Please see here for more information on Day 2.
