Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position in the Dept. Surgery, TCD / St. James’s Hospital. The successful applicant will join a well established research team investigating the mechanisms underlying malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract, in particular Oesophageal cancer. The position will involve maintenance and development of a well established departmental tissue Biobank and responsibilities will include laboratory ordering for the research group .

Research Assistant / Medical Scientist in Dept. Surgery, TCD/ St. James’s Hospital
1-2 years contract, Salary €27,000 – 29,000 per annum

Location: Dept. Surgery, Institute of Molecular Medicine, St. James’s Hospital / TCD.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals to join a well established research team investigating the mechanisms underlying malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract, in particular Oesophageal cancer.
The position, will involve maintenance and development of the already established departmental tissue Biobank. Principal duties will include:
1. The collection and prompt handling of surgical and outpatient samples, including the extraction of nucleic acids from whole blood, tissue and microdissected tissue samples, generation of cDNA, separation of monocytes and polymorphonuclear cells from blood, isolation of nuclear and cytoplasmic extract from cells and tissue.
2. Management of a specialised database for the departmental Biobank.
3. Writing and enforcing Standard Operating Procedures and ensuring good laboratory practice is observed.
4. Provide scientific support to MSc, PhD and MD students undertaking research within the department.
5. Management of the laboratory stocks with regards to general lab ordering, etc.
The successful candidate should have a minimum of a BSc in a relevant scientific discipline. They will be enthusiastic, hard working and have a good working knowledge of GLP. Previous experience in a working medical laboratory would be a distinct advantage.
